Die Werkstatt

Halde was founded in 2011 in a former lime store on the Landwehrkanal, with one drawing board and a conviction that has not moved since: a building should be legible. Where it stands, what holds it up, what it is made of — visible, without an explanation pinned to the wall beside it.

We work at 1:20 before we work at 1:200. Every project is drawn as a section first, because a section cannot lie about how a thing is built. The practice stays deliberately small — fourteen people, one studio, no branch offices — so that the person who draws the detail is the person standing on site when it is poured.

The brief, debriefed

Halde came to us with award-winning buildings and a website from 2016. We gave the practice a type system as rigorous as its plans — one typeface, two weights, and an image edit that crops for structure rather than sky.

  1. 01

The archive came before the homepage

Forty-six projects, one template. Building the record first means every new building is an entry, not a redesign — the site can take another decade of work without being rebuilt.

  2. 02

    Cropped for structure, not sky

The old site led with wide exteriors, which is how everyone photographs a building and why nobody remembers it. The whole library was re-cropped to the part of the frame that shows how the thing is made.

  3. 03

The section is drawn, not scanned

Blatt 02 is vector, built in the browser. It weighs a few kilobytes, stays sharp on any screen, and still reads when a planning office prints it in black and white.
